Most children get a rash at some point in their lives. The cause of rashes can be viral, bacterial, fungal, contact, insect-related, or due to a condition of the skin. At Over the Moon Pediatrics, we can help you figure out what kind of rash your child has and what needs to be done to keep it under control.

  • Viral Rashes
    • Several viruses cause well-known, scary rashes.  Chickenpox, Measles, Rubella, Hand Foot Mouth, Roseola, Fifth Disease, Herpes - all of these viruses have classic rashes that can look quite impressive and just be part of a whole host of symptoms caused by that particular virus.
  • Bacterial Rashes
    • Strep and Staph are two common bacteria that can cause infections of the skin.  These infections often look very red and angry with associated pus or crusting and can be painful to the touch.
  • Fungal Rashes
    • Ringworm, athlete’s foot, jock itch, yeast diaper rash - these are all a result of fungi that invade the skin and cause rashes that can be itchy and take a long time to go away.
  • Contact Rashes
    • Diaper rashes in babies occur because of constant irritation from urine and stool.  Children new to wearing jewelry can sometimes develop rashes if they have a nickel sensitivity and are wearing items that contain nickel.  Poison oak and poison ivy can cause miserably itchy contact rashes.
  • Insect-Related Rashes
    • Mosquitoes and ants are notorious for biting and causing an itchy rash on exposed skin.  Other insects like ticks, scabies, and bed bugs can also cause rashes that might require prescription medications to address them.
  • Skin Condition Rashes
    • Eczema is probably the most common skin condition that causes a dry, itchy rash.  Infants can also get a rash from seborrheic dermatitis, also known as cradle cap.  Other skin conditions include acne, pityriasis, vitiligo, psoriasis, and ichthyosis.

The presentation of rashes are as variable as are their causes. If your child has a rash and you are unsure of what it is or how to treat it, give us a call at Over the Moon Pediatrics and schedule an appointment so we can properly evaluate your child.
