Asthma is a chronic disease that often starts in childhood and can continue into adulthood. Asthma changes the way your lungs allow air to go in and out by narrowing the airways and making it more difficult to breathe. While asthma cannot be cured, it is something that can be treated and controlled.

Asthma symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. These symptoms can be triggered by illnesses, smoke, pollen, poor air quality, pets, exercise, and strong odors amongst other things. It’s important to identify your child’s triggers as these are things that can make your child’s asthma worse.

Depending on the degree of your child’s symptoms, your child might be placed on a controller medication which is taken daily. These daily preventive asthma medications can be pills or inhalers. All children with asthma must also have access to a rescue inhaler. Rescue inhalers like albuterol and levalbuterol are used when a child has sudden asthma symptoms.

At Over the Moon Pediatrics, we can help evaluate your child if you are concerned about asthma. If a diagnosis of asthma is made, we will work hard to find the right treatment plan for your child. Once your child is under treatment for asthma, we will continue to follow up with him/her every 3 months to ensure symptoms are under control. Once asthma symptoms become well-controlled, we can space out asthma followup visits to every 6 months.

Regular asthma visits ensure that your child’s asthma is well controlled and asthma flares are minimized in severity and frequency. We will assist you with asthma medication review and refills as well as help you fill out your child’s Asthma Action Plan for schools and camps.
