Fevers are usually a sign that the body is fighting an infection against a virus or bacteria. The fever could be helpful in helping your child’s body fight his/her infection, but in the process of doing so, it can also make your child uncomfortable. Fevers are notorious for causing the heart rate and the respiratory rate go faster and can contribute to dehydration. If your child feels hot and you suspect your child has a fever, it is important to take his or her temperature with a thermometer. A rectal temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher is considered a true fever.

If your child has a true fever and is less than 2 months old or has not had his or her first set of vaccinations, please contact your pediatrician immediately. Other reasons to contact your child’s doctor include: looks very ill, unconsolable, fussy, severe headache, sore throat, ear pain, stiff neck, vomiting, diarrhea, signs of dehydration, or repeated fevers of 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

If your child is over 2 months of age and has a fever but is acting relatively well, there are things you can do to manage your child’s fever at home. Give your child the correct dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil, 6 months and up only). If you are unsure of your child’s correct dose, please visit our Symptom Checker to find out how much to give your child. These medications help to reduce your child’s temperature. Make sure your child stays hydrated by offering fluids frequently. Often, children lose their appetite when they are ill, but as long as they are drinking adequately and maintaining wet diapers or urinating normally, they will be okay.
