Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects many children’s ability to control their behavior. ADHD affects about 10% of children in the United States.

Symptoms of ADHD typically fit into one of three groups: inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Children with inattentiveness often have a hard time listening, paying attention, and following through on instructions, forget and lose things, are disorganized and easily distracted, and often seem to be daydreaming. Children with hyperactivity appear to be constantly moving, fidgeting, and talking and struggle with staying in their seats or being quiet. Children with impulsivity characteristically cannot wait for things - they speak and act without thinking, interrupt others, have a difficult time taking turns, and sometimes even do things like running into the street without looking for oncoming cars first.

Children with ADHD can have symptoms that belong into one or more of the 3 symptom groups. They can be classified as primarily inattentive (formerly called attention deficit disorder or ADD), primarily hyperactive and impulsive, or have a combined type where they demonstrate symptoms of all classes.

It is normal for all children to show some symptoms of ADHD at some point in their lives. Those who are eventually diagnosed with it have struggled with symptoms for over 6 months and it affects the child both at school and at home.

At Over the Moon Pediatrics, we can help you identify if your child has symptoms of ADHD. Once a diagnosis has been made, we assist you in creating a long-term treatment plan that includes education about ADHD, behavioral management and accommodations at home and school, and possible counseling. If your child requires ADHD medications, we will go over the methods we take to find the right medication and dosing as well as the proper follow up procedures to ensure your child continues to do well at both school and home.  Some children require more extensive management by either a neurologist or psychiatrist - we can help navigate you through those referrals and serve as your child’s gatekeeper for all recommendations and plans. Once your child is doing well on a particular dose of medication, prescriptions can often be sent electronically to your pharmacy of choice and we can oftentimes space out followup appointments to every 6 months and even do them virtually!

If you believe your child may be showing symptoms of ADHD, please call our office to schedule an appointment.
